Which is the best reverse camera?

What is a reverse camera

A backup camera is an entire system that you can install in your car which lets you get a view from the back side of your car. Many newer models of cars have these built in, or as part of upgrades, but sometimes these upgrades can actually cost more than just installing a system in yourself!

There are two main components to a backup camera. There is the camera itself, which will fit either inside your rear window, or outside near your license plate or bumper. The other main component is the screen, which you can fit near your dashboard.

Two major types of backup camera systems are available on the market right now. You have either wired systems or wireless systems – both are have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Backup cameras are incredibly handy and in fact, almost necessary on large vehicles such as RVs, trucks, and trailers. These vehicles usually have obstructed rear views, and the camera provides a very vital eye, making the road safer both for the driver and other motorists and pedestrians.

Why you need a reverse camera

Depending on what kind of vehicle you drive, you’ll have a use for reverse(also known as backup) cameras. The main advantage of having one is that it will help eliminate any blind spots. Of course, the larger your vehicle, the more blind spots you are going to have!

While many vehicles have audible proximity alarms that go off when you get too close to any other object, being able to actually see is much more effective.

If you are buying a system for your personal car, the biggest advantage is increased safety and less chances of an accident.

If you are buying for a commercial fleet, such as a bus, truck, or RV, then your biggest advantage is increased driver/pedestrian safety and a lot of money saved in the long run from reduced accidents and liabilities.

Rear view cameras can also be used with heavy duty vehicles such as construction equipment.

Wired or Wireless?

Wireless systems are much easier to install, since you don’t have to run any wires anywhere. The only issue is that you have to provide a separate power source to each unit.

Wired systems can run on a single power source, but they are a little tougher to install.

Wireless systems are also susceptible to disturbance and the signal may falter the longer the distance is – so if you are using this on a long RV or a large truck, you may have some trouble.

Wired systems in general have much higher video quality, since the signal is constant and going through the wires.

Setting it up

Setting up a backup camera is not too difficult, especially if it is wireless. If you are using a wired system, though, it’ll be a little bit of work. If you are handy, you can do it yourself, but if you aren’t, then it may be a better idea to go to your favorite garage to get it done.

Another thing you will have to figure out is how many cameras you need. Just like dashboard cameras, you may opt to have more than one camera to get better visibility.

If you have a small car, the one camera should be good enough. If you want added visibility, then a two camera system or even a three camera system would let you see the widest angle.

If you want to opt for a four camera system, then you are looking at something that will give you the widest view from the back, and you’d have two cameras mounted on either side of your vehicle or trailer.

One thing to keep in mind is that the more cameras you have, the more your display will be split up. So if you had two cameras, you’d see each feed side by side on your display in split-screen mode – the same goes for three and then four cameras.

Each camera is also surrounded by infra-red lights which activate when it is dark, so you can see up to 50 feet away even if it is very dark. The cameras are weatherproof, able to withstand all the elements, so you don’t need to worry too much about maintenance.

For around $300, this is a solid deal, especially if you have a trailer or a larger vehicle.

Pyle PLCM7500 Car Vehicle Backup Camera & Monitor

The Pyle PLCM7500 backup camera system is an inexpensive yet very functional backup camera system that is a great choice for someone just looking to get a system set up on their car for relatively cheap.

It comes with a camera that you can mount on your rear license plate, from where it will give the best view, and then you run a wire from the camera to the included monitor which you can set up on your dashboard.

The camera performs well even in low light(but not complete darkness, because there is no infra-red).

The really nice thing about the Pyle PLCM7500 is that the monitor automatically displays guide lines – so as you are backing up, you can judge how much space there is/will be.

It is a little difficult to install because there are no schematics included with the kit, but the wiring in still pretty straightforward.

For less than $100, the Pyle is a no brainer – an excellent system for personal use.

Rear View Safety RVS-770613 Video Camera with 7.0-Inch LCD

The RVS-770613 is much like its brother the RVS-770614 which we just saw above – except that there is only one camera in this system, versus two in the RVS-770614.

That one camera alone is responsible for the nearly $100 difference in price!

You may be thinking that the Pyle we just talked about is less than $100, and these cameras are more than $200-300 – so what’s the big deal?

Well the main difference is that these RVS cameras have infrared lights – which means you can see in complete darkness.

These cameras are also completely weather-proof and shock resistant – a guarantee not provided on the cheaper ones.

ATian Wireless Ir Night Vision Rear View Backup Camera System

Priced at less than $100, the ATian backup camera system is another budget choice that still manages to pack lots of features. The biggest advantage this camera has over others is that it has infra-red lights which can let you see even in complete darkness.

The system comes with a large monitor that displays guide lines to help you back up into tight spots, and the camera has a metal mounting bracket, which means you can fit it on pretty much any surface you like.

The ATian backup camera system is wireless, so there is no messy cabling you have to deal with – you only need to provide a power connection to both the monitor and the camera, and the video is transmitted wirelessly.

While this is convenient, the picture may not be as clear as a wired connection, and it will also be subject to disturbances, but if convenience is more important to you, then you really can’t beat this camera for the price.
